Black Lagers are deceptively drinkable and light on the palate compared to their cousins, Stout and Porter. Magnetic Midnight is constructed of a clean all-California grown and malted base with the added color of an especially dark malt. German Noble hops added late in the brewing process provide a subtle fruitiness and spiciness to complement the malty, cocoa finish. Prost!

A truly deep brown liquid comes out of the can, black with walnut highlights when held up to light. Topped by a couple fingers of dense off white foam that persists and presents an enticing image of wintery refreshment.
The nose belies it's pitch blackness with lightly floral aromas and the scent of a rustic bread crust sliding out of the dense cloud.
At first sip my lips part in eager anticipation and are met with an unfortunate stale coffee flavor. This subsides as the beer makes its way across my palate and my perceptions adapt. Underneath there is some pleasant fruity notes (early apples and the dry kind of persimmon) along with the floral/herbal/earthy notes of old world hops. There's a faint cola like character to it.
The body is light and pleasant. nice crisp beer with great carbonation
Overall this is a pleasant enough beer and a welcome addition to a session but it leans toward the slightly cola like flavors that I've seen in some german shwarzbiers and that is not my favorite flavor not. It's not straight up coke but the hint is there strongly enough that this probably won't be a regular in my fridge.
