Cascadian Dark Ales, or Black IPAs, were first brewed in the Pacific Northwest. Ours features Oregon-grown Simcoe hops and dark malts that were steeped in cold water to extract color and a rich dark chocolate character with less roasty bitterness. Simcoe dry hops impart piney and grapefruit aromas backed up by rich malt character and a firm bitterness.

Having this beer on-tap at the brewery. Served in a pint glass this beer draws a very dark brown, practically black color with a tan head that’s about 2/3 of an inch thick when first drawn and served. Head settles to a very thick ring surrounding the inside of the glass along with a nice film layer of surface foam and excellent lacing. Aromas of roasted malts with slight hints of chocolate and some pine, earthy, somewhat citrusy hops. Has a roasted malt flavor with just a hint of chocolate that’s followed by piney and a nice hint of grapefruit, citrus hops. A very excellent, extremely well balanced flavor profile here. Has a mostly smooth and frothy, somewhat crisp and slightly prickly, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Has a slightly grainy finish and a slightly chocolatey aftertaste. A very excellent representation of this style.

Poured into a pint glass at the brewery
A: Dark brown with a one-finger head
S: Chocolate malt, hops, cocoa
T: Some soy sauce up front, then follows the nose
M: Light for a stout but the hops add a nice bitterness
O: A unique take on a stout. A bit light but I need to learn more about this cold malt process

Hoppier nose i might have expected, but it forsn’t seem to have a strong impact on the flavor of the stout

Matte coffee black with a thick, convex puffy khaki dome.
Smell a little funky and hoppy of rug, pine, orange and a sort of barrel presence almost.
Taste is kinda tart like grape with cocoa, charred roast, and a slightly acidic note of orangey-piney hops.
The medium body has a light airy froth and a cottony finish.
I'm not sure what to think of this. It wasn't sour, but having it side by side with a Stout and a Porter, it was lighter, sharper, and had an odd twang to it that was a little questionable.
