DATE: July 21, 2019... OCCASION: chilling poolside on the hottest day of the year so far--might as well be at the shore... GLASSWARE: Otto's pint... pours a light golden body rife with bubbles, forming a quickly fizzling off-white head that delicately rings the glass... its life, born from an hours-old grunt, is obvious... its aroma is tawny straw, lemon, grass, buttery cracker, and honey... kolschs seldom bring the thunder, so I wasn't expecting much more than that, but the Santium brings pepper and low-res spices, while the Meridian flicks some berries into the mix... beyond the aroma, this behaves as a kolsch should: crisp, bright, refreshing, crushable, and smooth, with little to disturb its evacuation... some hops buzz the teeth after each sip, but the finish delivers a malt bill that evokes salty chips... the flavor profile is light berry, pepper, freshly mown hay, lemon, herbal tea, and sweet cereal grains... I like this one, especially as it appeased the heat as reasonably as could be expected.... nuanced for its style, a solid offering from Last Wave...
