To Australia, this traditional English IPA is reimagined using expert craftmanship and unexpected yet exceptional flavours for a uniquely balanced and flavoursome finish. Our expert brewers firstly craft a richly hopped English IPA, adding a light touch of macadamia honey for a very subtle sweetness. They then mature the beer in fine, hand-selected single-malt whisky barrels to create further depth and complexity, imparting notes of vanilla and hints of soft spice. The result is a unique and truly extraordinary IPA of unrivalled quality.

Purchased from Dan Murphy's in Belmont, Victoria, in December 2021 and drunk in October 2022.
After taking ten months to get around to this one it then took me an extra 10 minutes to get through the annoying, extra-thick wax seal...
L: Pours a brilliantly clear, golden rusty orange. The head is yellowy white. There's a lot of carbonation fizzing its way up the middle of the glass. It's a big bottle and subsequent pours darken the beer and removes the initial clarity. Still, a very pretty beer.
N: Sweet, tangy malt with notes of honey. Maybe a little bit of mineral or freshly-tilled earthiness. Actually, I think it's the whisky barrel.
T: Sweet and tangy, with floral and earthy hops. There's woodiness and a bit of vanilla and whisky from the barrel. Honey is evident right at the back end. Bitterness is restrained.
M: The beer is soft and full in the mouth, and despite the evident carbonation in the glass, carbonic prickle is minimal. Everything here compliments the taste.
O: This was a limited batch of 5000 that copped flak amongst Australia's beer intelligentsia for being a) a former craft brewer turned macro daring to create a premium, boxed offering and b) charging a premium price of $50AUD for the honour of purchasing the beer. It didn't help that it was mainly available unrefrigerated through Australia's only real liquor box-store retailer (and enemy of the independents), Dan Murphy's.
But history lesson aside, this is a very enjoyable beer. Despite spending 11 months in my fridge, it presented beautifully and, to me, matched the promise of a premium beer experience (notwithstanding the annoying ten minutes trying to get at the bottle top through all the bloody wax!). It delivered a subtle, honey and whisky-tinged English IPA that drank easily and enjoyably. I'll definitely buy a second release in the Pioneer Collection if one comes out this year.
Cheers!
