On tap at James Squire Brewhouse 19/3/08.

A - Served in a pot glass with 1 centimetre of fluffy white head atop a fairly clear light golden beer.
S - Wheat malt and some clove spice.
T - Same as smell but with a bit of bananna as well.
M - Light to medium bodied with a fairly high carbonation.
D - Not really all that interesting but quite refreshing on a warm & humid night.

I was unimpressed with this brew. Usually the brews from Malt Shovel fit right in my palate, but not this time. Hazy straw in appearance with a relatively quickly-dissipating head. A Zesty citrus taste up front followed by a thin wheat taste. This sample almost tastes a little young and still green. Hopefully this isn't indicative of the beer itself. I'm hoping I got a bad batch.

What is going on at the Squire Brewhouse? The Colonial Wheat is one of my favourite Aussie brews and today was the first time I had it on tap and there was something seriously wrong with this beer.

Colour is light yellow going on orange. A very small head goes quickly and there is very low carbonation.

Nose is a supersized version of the bottled stuff with the banana, cloves and wheat coming out in droves. Still a great smelling beer.

Palate was somewhat different, and personally I believe it was faulty. It was incredibley acidic, so much so that there was really no joy in drinking this beer. No real flavour except for citrus (lemon, lime). I have never had a beer with such a harsh acidity. I am sure it is a fault (lactic acid? acetic acid?) so I will avoid passing complete judgement on this beer until I try it again (on tap that is, I still love the bottled stuff).

nice drinkable wheatbeer from squires. not my favorite style, but this is one that goes well in a typical aussie summer.

light, cloudy golden color. distinct lack of head retention, thinned out to nothing very quickly. smelled like canned two fruits, lots of peaches and pear, sweet, with a hint of yeast. some spicy tinges, clove and allspice come to mind. quite full bodied and rich for a wheat beer, fruity flavors, sweetbread backbone, with again spicy traces reaching into a hoppy finish that was rather pleasant. not too complex but quite drinkable.

the sort of beer you can knock down in warmer weather, the j.s wheat is a good solid guzzler that has some character, but overall doesnt have the depth of something youd get from the north of europe.

what a great looking/smelling beer. deffinite banana fruity aroma to it, my wife says apples, but either way its nice. and, well, banana in color also, not what i expected but very impressed.

crisp, clean fruity flavor. just the beer to have after a hard day out in the sun. very refreshing beer.

It's a shame this beer is limited release for it's clearly Malt Shovel's best. Hazy Light Golden appearance, with a smell of Apples, Oranges, and believe it or not, Chinese Ya Pears. Rates very high on my drinkability scale. I'd drink more of it if i had any.

Very nice, and very quaffable. Hazy orange with a nice lasting white head, with very nice lace. Nose= banana, wheat, yeast, bubblegum, clove, ditto for the palate, very authentic, very similiar to german Wheats, tops. Highly drinkable, and very enjoyable, i nice session beer perhaps?
