Bado Brewing "Zed's In Oaxaca - Chocolate Habanero Stout"
on tap at the brewery on 17 February 2018
Notes: Typical stout appearance with a very dark brown-black body and short head of tan. The limited aroma displays only hints of stout and no pepper character, nor any stand-out chocolate notes. The flavor, however, delivers lots of peppery spice beyond the first sip as the acids start to build in the mouth. Fortunately some of the floral and fruity character of the habanero comes through, redeeming it a bit (it's very hard to get that without going overboard on the heat). I should note, however, that others at my table didn't find it that spicy, so maybe I'm off on this one. Everyone agreed that it could use a little more chocolate character given the name. I'm not even sure chocolate is used in it's production, I think it's just called a "chocolate stout". Medium-light in body and gently bristling on the tongue before warming to become smoother - but the acidity also lends it a bite and repeat sips will make it seem much sharper. Overall, a decent stout apart from the heat, and at least interesting, but perhaps a bit too hot and spicy for some.
