Damm S.A. “Equilater”
33 cl brown glass bottle coded “Consumir preferentemente antes del fin de 05/25 L253704” and sampled on 29/11/23
€6,90 @ El Corte Inglés, Sevilla, ES

Notes via stream of consciousness: The label reads “Imperial Stout 2022”. It’s poured a very dark brown body that appears an opaque black in the glass but if you hold it to the light you can see a clear, thin strip of reddish mahogany brown along the base of the glass. The head is a two finger plus cap of rocky tan foam. There are some lees left behind in the base of the bottle. In the nose I’m getting cocoa powder, milk chocolate, and distant dried fruit. The flavor follows with more fruit and darker chocolate. It’s fruity with both golden and dark raisins, dried fig, and strawberry. The malt offers dark bittersweet chocolate, an edge of burnt sugar, and a hint of dark caramel with a soft, almost smoky roastiness. Of course there’s also some alcohol there, and although it’s noticeable and lingers following the swallow I feel that it’s presence is needed in such a strong beer, and it certainly helps to balance the rich and sweet malt. It finishes dry with bittersweet chocolate, more caramel than was initially found, a pleasant touch of fruitiness, and a cloud of soft roastiness. As it lingers a woody spiciness arises to dry it out even further. In the mouth it’s full bodied and silky smooth with a moderate, very fine-bubbled carbonation that suggests it may be bottle-conditioned. I don’t see anything about that but it is aged in Chestnut barrels. The head held up very well and it’s left some very good lacing about the glass. Given that it’s 11% ABV, which usually kills the head and hurts the lacing, that’s impressive. At first I didn’t see the full complexity at hand but as it’s warmed and opened up I find it quite fantastic. There are a lot of beers that hit you with more, making a bigger impression initially, but it’s the ones that offer finesse that are the most brilliant and this is one of them.

De Corte Inglés San Juan. En copa Teku. Jugando a Darksiders 2 y, luego, Streets of Rage 4. Pues no les ha quedado nada mal. El alcohol se nota pero no molesta, bebiéndose con bastante facilidad. Presenta intensas notas achocolate e higos junto con algo de regaliz bastante agradables. Del castaño ni rastro eso si
