Presentation: Draft, served in a Libbey teardrop beer glass.
Appearance: The thin, off white, quarter finger head goes away fairly quickly and leaves behind a thin foam ring and lots of patchy lacing all over the glass. It's a clear, bright, reddish amber color.
Smell: It's a wonderful and complex scent with notes of malt, cherries, cloves, nutmeg and white peppercornsĀ
Taste: It's mostly sweet, with some cherries and malt as it starts off. Some slightly herbal and spicy flavors emerge towards the end. The alcohol note is not jarring at all. It's mostly just a warm blanket that wraps everything together nicely.
Mouthfeel: It's quite robust, with a thick oiliness that covers the palate. The finish is quite crisp though with a moderately strong, high carbonation bite.
Overall: Barleywines are not for everyone, and that's OK. Those who do appreciate them though, will find a great example in Matriarca. It's strong, with a rich flavor profile and great looks to boot. An awesome beer from Boxlab.
