A rich, soft American-style porter, brewed with heaps of oats.

My thanks to thehyperduck for setting me up with a slew of new Ontario stouts to try as well as a couple of other unusual brews. One of them is this Oat Porter from Fairweather in Hamilton. I am intrigued. It pours a dark brown with a modest, even, tan head. The nose is faint chocolate. A medium chocolate malt body with some good crispness. A satisfying mouthfeel which encourages repeated sips. I was expecting more silkiness from the "heaps of oats" though. A big thanks to thehyperduck for allowing me to try an interesting beer that would never in a million years be in our provincial store.

473 ml can. Thanks Chris for sharing this. Served cold into a pint glass.
Appearance- virtually black from the can and pours an impressive multi finger head that is deep tan in colour. Good staying power for the frothy head.
Smell- some dark chocolate, slight bit of coffee roastiness and maybe even a trace of vanilla.
Taste- dark chocolate and roastiness with medium bitterness.
Mouthfeel- super luxurious and smooth.
Overall- very nice and super smooth potter. Please keep this as a regular.

500 mL Bottle. ABV 5.5%.
Appearance: Dark brown, Under a finger of creamy tan head, Mediocre retention.
Aroma: Nutty, Coffee, Slight chocolate, Vanilla, Toasted malts, Oatmeal.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, Thin, Smooth.
Flavour: Coffee, Oatmeal, Toasted malt, Nutty, Slight bitterness.
Overall: I'm usually pretty skeptical about dark beers from Fairweather. I thought I'd give it a go and was met with mediocrity. It's thin, fairly simple, and you end up just wanting to get through it rather than enjoy it.

It seems it's not too tough to make a decent porter; most I try these days are fine. So is this. If anything, the original English ones are the poorest, occasionally being just too watery to be satisfying. Nothing blows your socks off about this one, but it's decent. Decent sweet burnt & bready malts, carbonation is good - just don't drink it too cold.

Fairly straightforward porter. Malty and not hoppy, and English style rather than American style. On tap at the source. Hits the style. Drinkable, very brown with lasting bit of head.
