Pours very dark brown and clear (SRM 33-36), This is similar to dark cola with slight garnet heads. A very light khaki froth briefly holds two inches before falling to a ring and leaving no lace on a PBGC tulip glass.
The aroma is nice and crisp with bittersweet chocolate. A hint of Bourbon is present, however, there is no coconut. The aroma starts much better than it ends.
The flavor sort of follows the nose. The chocolate and Bourbon is here, though lighter than anticipated. A light roasted malt is stronger than expected from the aroma. Some fruitiness is added as well as a light ash flavor. Bitterness are each light and balanced. The finish is long and modest.
Alcohol is about as expected in this medium to light bodied beer. The texture is smooth and silky. Carbonation is light and prickly.
The line between Porter and Stout, at least for me, runs through the level of chocolate and roast. This seems more akin to a Porter. It is enjoyable, even though I had expected much more.
