The beer is orange/copper and clear (SRM 13-15). A very brief, light khaki head is dense and creamy for the few seconds it lasts. There is no lacing and no suggestion of the head within one minute of pouring.
The aroma is initially strong, with mincemeat pie and raisins. Otherwise there is a similarity to mulled cider. Lots of apple pie and cinnamon throughout. The pumpkin pie shows up after a few minutes. This is all nicely done, with nothing being aggressive. Warmth reveals nutmeg. This beer presents all the best Thanksgiving fruit pies in a single experience.
The flavor is much more subdued and subtle than the aroma is. I find this phenomenon to be common among Pumpkin Pie beers. Sweetness is here with no real bitterness, yet it is in check. A mild finish seems to be never ending.
A medium body and slick, soft texture. There is no harshness whatsoever. Carbonation is fine and prickly and alcohol is about as expected.
In my opinion, pie varieties of Pumpkin beers tend to be gimicky. This one is light on gimmicks and exemplifies how one can capture pumpkin inspiration and spice without being gaudy and trite expressions of pie.
Fleur de Lis has a Pumpkin Gourd beer that is a great counterpart to this one. They ought to be experienced on their own individual merits.
