This one is clear, dark brown, with dark mahogany highlights (SRM 28-30). A short-lived, fine, almond head crackles as it dissipates, leaving no lace and no ring on a PBGC pub pint.
Roasted malt leads the way, quickly followed by milk chocolate and currants. Modest fumes of alcohol are present. Fresh-baked pumpernickel bread rounds it out. I detected no smoke or marshmallow, however, it is quite sweet.
The flavor is sweet and fruity. This is more akin to a Belgian Strong Dark Ale than a Stout. It is clearly not a BSEA. It also does not seem to be a Milk Stout. There is no sense of S'mores, however, there is a hint of bitterness. The long, mild finish carries a bit of acid, and alcohol is clearly prominent.
A medium to full bodied beer with a smooth/hard texture. Alcohol is high with only light warmth. Carbonation is soft and light.
Style scores aside, this is a tasty beer, and definitely worth enjoying again. While far from the aroma and flavor expectations, it was enjoyable as a dark beer on a mild, mid-Autumn evening.
