Bira 91 "The India Pale Ale" is a hop mutiny in the glass. High in alcohol and brewed with the world's most flavourful aroma and bitter hops, this is a beer with a punch. Rich aromas of tropical fruit with a mildly sweet front start to seduce you, until you get hit by a burst of spicy, extra bitter finish.
Ingredients[:] Mix of Two-Row Pilsner Malts, Pale & Wheat Malts, Hops - Cascade, Magnum & Brewer's Gold

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of caramel malts, citrus. Taste is citrus, mild pine and malts, very light bitterness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is decent, but the hops were not as pronounced as they should be for the style.

This was quite a find at the Corner Foodery in Philly on one of my recent visits. I am always scouring for CANs to add to The CANQuest (tm) & they are a great source. I was drawn in by their monkey logo since what suggests "fun" like a monkey? I was stunned by the fact that it is an Indian brewery & I knew that I had to add one to The CANQuest (tm).
From the CAN: "Ale brewed with Coriander & Orange Peel"; "Bier*Beer*Birra*Biere*Cerveza*Cervesa"; "Imagined in India".
The monkey decided to be playful on the Crack! & give me a spritz of his CANtents across my fingertips. Cheeky monkey! I showed him who's boss with a Gussie Busch Glug, raising nearly three fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with excellent retention, eventually leaving a buttload of lacing behind as he slid around. He was clearly going to be a behavior problem, but when the head settled, revealing the color as a Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7), he was cowed by the sudden appearance of The Gelt Gang of Croesus, Midas & Mammon, clamoring for a taste. Poor monkey! He came out of hiding once they had retreated & mimicked me as we both leaned in for a sniff. This was NOT an English IPA! It smelled like the monkey had stashed all of his tropical fruits in there for a snack later. No wonder he was so unwound about my delving into it! I got notes of pine, caramel, mango, papaya & guava on the nose. If the taste was anything remotely close, we were going to have a winner! I pushed the monkey aside for my first sip, but he was so downcast that I deigned to share with him. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was like the new hybrid AIPAs that incorporate both PNW hops and Southern Hemisphere hops, imparting a dank, piney, tropical fruit flavor that is SO much better than simply another tropical AIPA. I will dun them for being a little heavy-handed with the Caramel malt, however. It is one of those things where a little goes a long way, as Samuel Adams found out with their initial iteration of Rebel IPA & tweaked to reduce its presence. I think that the same thing would be beneficial in this beer - tone down the use of caramel malt for a greater hop presence. Still, the fact that it was so hop-forward bespeaks, to me, an AIPA. I am going to a) score it as an AIPA & b) submit a change request to see if the mods/Bros agree. Finish was semi-dry and the IBUs were rather low, but I still think that it fares better when thought of as an AIPA. YMMV. The monkey is now going to help me finish the remainder of the CANtents.

12oz bottle into Nonic Pint
Clear dark gold with super thin white head
Caramel, pine, tangerine citrus
Mellow fruitiness that follows into a bitter dry finish
Light-to-Medium-bodied, average carbonation
Overall this was interesting as it had this mellow flavor, that I couldn't place wasn't malty or anything but different.
