1L howler from my local Liquor Depot outlet, who never seem to fail to amaze me, for what they are. The Annex Ale Project, on the other hand...
This beer pours a clear, dark red-brick amber colour, with two flabby fingers of puffy, rocky, and somewhat bubbly tan head, which leaves a few instances of wanly streaky lace around the glass as things quickly progress.
It smells of toasted, and sort of meaty caramel malt, a mixed black stone fruitiness, some further free-range ashiness, and plain earthy, weedy, and musky floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, wet tobacco, a subtle earthy nuttiness, faint domestic fruit salad, and more understated leafy, musty, and dead floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-supporting frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and mostly smooth, with a touch of the ol' smokiness perhaps making a minor dent in the proceedings. It finishes trending dry, the malt sort of bottoming out, and the roasted character amping things up.
Overall - this is a rather well-rendered version of the style, but take that with a soupcon of salt, as I really have little experience in parsing this sort of thing. At any rate, a tasty and engaging brew exists here - too bad they've limited its distribution to the hegemony of Liquor Stores N.A., or whatever the hell they're called.
