650ml bottle - a 'North American Brown Ale'. Nothing much more to say here, I guess.

This beer pours a clear, dark red-brick brown colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some decent tightly webbed lace around the glass as it slowly but evenly subsides.

It smells of lightly roasted, and mildly meaty caramel malt, some oily bar-top nuttiness, faint black stone fruit, and some tame herbal, musty, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, some bready nuttiness, bittersweet cocoa powder, a minor earthy yeastiness, faint hints of cafe-au-lait, and more well understated (or underwhelming, take yer pick) leafy, weedy, and floral 'verdant' hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly benign in its clock-punching frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and more or less smooth, as nothing really takes the time to make a nuisance of itself here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and nutty essences definitely predominating.

Overall - yeah, this doesn't exactly come off like a hopped to the nuts Yankee version of the style, but something a lot more equivocating. Definitely more English in its bearing, but maybe that's just because I've had better examples of the real deal in the past few days.
