Pours a golden orange with a finger and a half of foamy head that dissipates to a thin ring with some lacing. Faint citrus aroma. Taste follows nose with a nice bitterness at the end.

A truly excellent exemplar of the New England style double IPA. I rated the look only a 4 because the head, although very thick and gorgeous when first poured, faded quickly. But other than that, everything else about this beer is perfect or close enough. It has a sweet but not cloying smell of grapefruit, pine & some sweeter tropical fruit like mango or pineapple.
The taste is complex, with the bitter & sweeter tastes fighting it out — but when I say 'sweet' I don't mean malty. The malt is there, but very understated, as it should be. There is bitterness, but it's not excessive. This beer knows it's an IPA but it doesn't rub your face in it as they like to do on the Left Coast.
The mouthfeel is Goldilocksian, just right. Neither too thin like some goddamn light beer nor too thick like a syrupy stout or a cup of used motor oil, (same thing).
The most amazing thing about this beer is how well it hides the alcohol content. I've seen Typhon in the cooler at my local beer store for a month or two but I didn't purchase any until tonight because the 8.5% ABV scared me off. Usually anything above about 7.2% is too boozy-tasting for me. Tonight I decided to give it a try on a whim, and I'm glad I did. But this stuff goes down like it's Budweiser, so be careful.
All in all one of the best NE IPA's I've ever tasted, and probably the best double NEIPA.
ASIDE:
I was intrigued to see that River Styx Brewing Company is located in Fitchburg, MA, a small city with which I am well acquainted, and with which I was, from 1984 to '94 very well acquainted. It's a hardscrabble place whose glory days are more than a century in the rear-view mirror. The last time I drove down Main Street, half of the storefronts in the glorious 19th century buildings were boarded up. Fitchburg is not a yuppie-trendy beer-bro locale. It's 100% working class.
Fitchburg has always welcomed immigrants; into the 1970's it published a Finnish language newspaper (which I, as a Finnish-American, was delighted to discover). These days most of its newer arrivals speak Spanish — but there are lots of other languages spoken in Fitchburg. It's a poor city struggling to make a comeback & I enthusiastically salute River Styx Brewing for their participation in the Fitchburg Renaissance. You should support them too, especially since this beer is awesome.

Pours a light orange with a large fluffy head that ends up as lacing.
The first whiff from the can is dominated by floral and piney hops. Once in the glass citrus aromas dominate.
Tastes of lightly tangy grapefruit and sweet pineapple with a mildly bitter hop finish.
Medium light body with light carbonation. Light , clean, dry mouthfeel.
I recommend this very enjoyable and drinkable NE IPA!

Great nose and taste, with grapefruit and citrus coming through strong for me. Of the 5 IPAs I tried there, this one was my favorite. I will travel for this when it comes out in cans again!

Excellent New England IPA - Hazy and hoppy. River Styx does a great job with balance on their IPAs. There is a subtle sweetness to balance out all the hops.

Opaque pale yellow gold with a creamy white foam head. Notes of juicy fruit gum, orchard fruit, pineapple, mango, peach, grapefruit, berry, orange citrus, lemon pith, piney herbal earthy green minty dankness, mild spice, with some sugary malt sweetness. Medium bodied, creamy smooth with moderate carbonation. Overall a nice New England DIPA.
