Revisiting the first IPA I tried a full serving of.
16 oz can acclimated to 49°F and poured into an IPA glass.
Pours a somewhat hazy marigold color with a quickly dissipating 1.5 finger white head, leaving almost zero lacing.
Initial aroma is lime or grapefruit, I can't decipher, mostly rind or oil, reminds me of fruit slice candies because there seems to be a sweetness to it. Sweetness or not, I pick up a heavy honey aroma, and maybe a slight hint of licorice or clove. After agitating I notice some sterile alcohol, hops, and clean aroma of lime/grapefruit.
Initial taste before swallowing is milky sweet, followed by a slight alcohol burn on the tip of the tongue, followed by more sweet which then develops a lime rind taste. After swallowing I'm immediately hit with a burst of creamy sweetness, trading places with grapefruit juice and pith, this is bitter and rests on the tip, back, and back sides of the tongue. Bitterness is moderate, and honestly a good amount of the hops are overpowered by the like/grapefruit taste, I'm really only getting hop taste in the middle of the roof of the mouth. I did get a note of vanilla on the swallow but not much vanilla overall. I have been told by an employee that out of the milkshake IPA series produced by the brewery, this one is the least milky, so I feel validated in not tasting much lactose.
Mouthfeel is good, juicy, creamy, soft, medium bodied. Has a little resistance when flowing.
Overall it's good, I have always thought key lime pie would be a magnificent flavor for an IPA. I realize the point of brewing is usually to be inspired by something, but I do wish it tasted more like key lime pie specifically, although that's completely on me and doesn't detract from my rating. One negative is that I had a hard time distinguishing like taste from grapefruit, and the lime was more oil/rind than juice. Another is that I feel it could have benefited from a very little bit more hoppiness, but I'm very glad it wasn't too much hoppiness. I still found it to be nicely balanced, and quite enjoyable despite these drawbacks.
Would buy again for sure, not often but definitely would.
