It’s OJ Hercules for breakfast! This year, for our annual Pink Boots Collaboration brewday, we brewed Athena #6. It is a variant on our OJ Hercules IPA with extra Valencia orange to give you that OJ juiciness and champagne flavor to balance the finish.

Acclimated to 49°F and poured properly into an IPA glass.

Pours a hazy dull lemon to very very light orange color with a 1.5 finger foamy, quickly dissipating white head.

Initial aroma is that classic citrus and hop IPA smell, sharp and crisp. I get some orange juice smell, and a hint of lemon. After agitating the hop smell is more concentrated, and I think I pick up a small hint of pine.

Initial taste is the bitter bite you'd expect from the style. Lasting into the aftertaste and settling on the back of the tongue and back of the roof of the mouth. I could smell the orange right before the beer entered my mouth but couldn't taste it on the first sip. On the second sip the orange was very noticeable, a juice like taste. Leaving it to warm in the mouth seems to bring out more orange. The hoppiness is average(?), so the bitterness is at a nice level that retains drinkability. I am reminded of the color it pours, but also of a light pastel green color when I taste the aftertaste, a soft and bright hop taste brings that color to mind here.

Mouthfeel is nice, it's a little thin which suits it, and slightly juice like. Sleek is not the perfect word but a good way to describe it. The carbonation leaves it quickly unfortunately, rendering it somewhat like a bitter orange juice, and perhaps more sleek than it would be when with more carbonation present. Overall a nice mouthfeel.

I can't overtly taste champagne, but the bitterness is reminiscent. Honestly it does make me think of a mimosa! I think it's fantastic when themed beers are to do that. I'm sure a lot of people have tried a beer that claims replication but end up disappointed, and I do think this one does a good job overall.

Wouldn't buy frequently, but likely to buy again. It is somewhat expensive which informed my decision but I like it for sure.
