Saved for national creamsicle day.
16 oz acclimated to 49°F and poured into a tulip glass.
Pours a light and pale (in saturation) orange with very little effervescent white head, dissipating quickly and leaving no lacing.
Initial aroma is very sweet, orangey, creamy/milky, and I get buttery and smooth caramel notes. Smells exactly like a creamsicle should, somehow greater than the sum of its parts. I get perhaps a slight bitter/hop smell but it's faint. After agitating I smell yogurt bacteria upfront, baked by dinner off those creamy and buttery notes.
Initial taste before swallowing is sweet, with orange flesh, plus some cream/butter. After swallowing I'm met with all of the same, realizing there's vanilla there too, plus a very light hop bitterness, very light. The aftertaste consists mostly of orange flesh, vanilla, and some caramel notes. No alcohol taste to be found, and a very creamy, round, and smooth overall taste and finish make this a true joy to drink. If I didn't know it was an IPA I absolutely wouldn't have guessed. Another thing to note is that unlike a lot of other beers containing vanilla that I've reviewed, I can clearly taste it here, a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one, as vanilla is one of my favorite flavors ever, and I often think it underutilized. In part, it adds that round smoothness I mentioned.
Mouthfeel is juicy, and slightly creamy. Just like the taste, it's round and smooth overall, all throughout the process. The carbonation does, however, die almost immediately, leaving me with essentially juice.
Overall this is marvelous. I realize it's a dessert beer, and a very sweet one at that, but it's truly representative of the flavor it's meant to emulate, and it excels in both quality and quantity of taste. I really could drink this just like it was juice or milk. My one gripe here being that I wish the carbonation lived longer.
River Styx brews some of their beers on and off, and currently this one is not being brewed. If it starts being brewed again, I will happily buy it again in a decent quantity, and recommend to many near me.
