The beer is clear, rich, dark-red mahogany (SRM 20-22). A shallow, light khaki head quickly falls from one-half inch to one-eighth inch.
The malt is sweet and bready and filled with fresh pumpernickel. Spicy notes of molasses punctuate the aroma. This is simple, yet spectacular rising out of an antique Pilsner glass.
The flavor follows the nose with a focus on the pumpernickel. Dates lead with plum pudding, building to a crescendo with allspice and mince. Light flavors of the barrel brandy and oak fill a long, mild finish. Light booziness warms exceptionally well.
This is a full bodied, sultry beer, with a hard/smooth texture. The alcohol is spot on with light heat and soft carbonation.
Doppelbocks, when done well, are fantastic and rich experiences. This one is top notch and just right on a cold, dry day with snow blanketing the ground.
