Pint Nine Brewing Co. "Cloud Jumper"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating

Notes via stream of consciousness: This is my second NEIPA from Pint Nine. It's poured a very hazy golden-peach body beneath a thumb's width of bright white foam. The aroma displays a lightly sweetish malt with nectarine, pine, citrus pith, grapefruit, apricot, and a rose-like floral character. I was hoping for a little more from the aroma but it's OK. On to the taste... the malt is lightly sweet and kind of thin. How strong is this? Ahh, I see, this is not an NEIPA, it's a New England style pale ale. I've got it; my bad! Clarity, clarity, clarity... that makes the aroma much better and it's not at all lacking. Moving on, the malt is sweetish, wheaty, and oat-like. I'm getting a lot of oats. The hops deliver notes of pine, nectarine, grapefruit, pomelo, gooseberry, some kind of melon, and something that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe it will come to me. The bitterness is listed at 25 IBUs and yet it seems a little stronger. It finishes dry, fruity, piney, lightly herbal, and a touch earthy. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp. The head has dropped but I still have a solid surface covering and there's a decent amount of lacing left behind on the glass that looks like the teeth of a skeleton. As a pale ale I find this quite nice. It's got a lot of character to it and it's really nicely balanced and rounded. It's far more than a 'reach for' beer that you don't pay any mind to but at the same time it really has a great dinkability to it.

Pours a hazy orange, 1" head, solid lacing despite the plastic airport bar cup. Nose is grapefruit and resin, light tropical fruits. Taste follows - good balance of sweet and bitter, like a Haribo grapefruit candy. Carb is sufficient to cut through the full mouthfeel, no perceived alcohol.

16 oz can, $2.99, no date, poured into Parish Teku.

Has a nice hazy glowing blonde color with a tall creamy head of 2 fingers, receding to a thick ring leaving lots of heavy toothpaste-like lacing on the sides.

Aroma brings cereal mash, some not-quite-ripe citrus, green hop pellet, and oatmeal.

Flavor is pretty linear and brings an equal balance of malt and hops. It's not fruity or juicy, there's a lot of citrus rind and pith. Finish of pine and white grapefruit, with hints of oatmeal grist. As a pale ale it's fine, but for Pint 9 to use the New England moniker really knocks it down some points because that's not anywhere to be found.

Feel is crisp and moderately clean; no alcohol detected; juicy finish with some stiff carbonation.

Overall, definitely not a good candidate for NE IPA, it's a bit weak and thin and flavorless, but it's a decent warm day IPA. It still is not something I'd buy again.

Price paid : $3.49 / can
Would buy again : no
