This stout poured out a syrupy brown, leaving a very dark brown/black bottom with a thick and lasting brown head. Nice and solid stout appearance. I noticed the head gradually sunk in the center, which left the foam raised on the sides of my glass. Interesting appearance.
The aroma was really pleasant. DEEP, roasted mocha coffee beans with chocolate notes, lightly bittersweet. Sweet, rich malts. Not terribly complex or heavily layered, but really exceptionally done. The aroma is worth the experience.
The taste was dominated by dry, dark chocolate with a moderate bittersweet aftertaste that calmed itself as the beer sat. The body was a bit light, slightly watery even with a bit too pure/clean finish. There was also a very distinct hop presence in the mouthfeel. This was not at all what I would expect from a stout and quite frankly disappointing.
Lastly, the mouthfeel was also a bit syrupy with a warm alcoholic feeling that lowered the drinkability substantially. It is also worth noting that the bottle I purchased lists the alcohol content at 6%, not the 5% listed here.
Try this and enjoy the delicate aroma, but in my opinion this one needs some work before it can be considered a definitive and quality "stout".

Appearance: Black opaque body, creamy low head.
Aroma: Hint of spice and slightly sweet.
Taste: Low bitterness, pretty sweet. I almost thought this was a milk stout. They sell this as a heavy and bitter stout, but on the countrary, although this is no light way, I found it more of a session beer.
Mouthfeel: Medium body.
Drinkability: One of the better of the English Stout category sold in Japan.
