New in my local beer store this week as part of a trifecta of Asylum brews....maybe a one off??
A- Love the artwork on the label here...well done! The brew itself pours an oil slick brown/black color, while the head, which is a dark tan color itself, is fizzy and starts out about one finger thick....swiftly and in noisy fashion, disappears into a faint bubbly film swirling around the middle of the liquid top....reminds me of Australia in shape for this instance. I can see through the top of the brew that the carbonation is reasonably aggressive, but the bubbles do look to be fine. Lacing leaves much to the imagination as well, only leaving behind a watery/oily film around the inside of my tulip glass.
S- The aromas are initially of rummy/bourbon warm booziness, with some dried black fruits, like fig and prune noticed. There is a deep, rich vanilla bean pod aroma, alongside some rum infused dark chocolate, which I find becomes more prominent as I am trying to figure out the other aromas, dry burnt grain malts, charred toffee/caramel, and maybe some molasses astringency. The finish is sweet and lingering of vanilla, with just a hint of hop bitterness to round things out. Overall, this category is balanced, deep and smooth.
T- The flavors follow suit to the aforementioned aromas, with bourbon infused vanilla taking front of the house here.....rich, and deep. Surprisingly, the alcohol, while noticeable, is not in your face, only providing a cleansing burn on the back of the palate, that is balanced out by heavy cream, marshmallow vanilla depth, milk chocolate fondue, nuances of French Vanilla creme blended coffee, and towards the finish, there is more of a classic dry burnt malt astringency, barrel charred bourbon barrel, which could be subbed for amber rum barrel, and a lingering muted bitterness provided from the blend of hop cones used here. Very nice flavors overall!
M/O- Solid medium/full bodied stout, with vibrant, yet mellow carbonation, as the appearance led me to believe, I find this to be a very well flavoured, balanced and rich Imperial Russian stout! The drinkability is actually quite nice here, and I honestly don't find the alcohol to be impeding....even my wife, who is not a stout drinker, thought this was a decent offering, which is like me really really liking this! I highly recommend anyone who gets the opportunity to try this, to get one and enjoy....a lovely dessert type stout!
