Had on tap. Shimmering opaque jet black with a finger and a half of lighter brown foam and tons of lacing. Smell and taste are clones: somewhat darker roast coffee brings out notes of dark chocolate, gentle earth, big roast and slight toasted caramel from the malt. Feel is roasty in a powerful way but never goes too far, has an airiness to fall back on with the malt backbone

The head was more pronounced at the brewery, fine golden chestnut, leaving spotty lace. This is a very dark brown porter, and essentially black in a Pretentious Beer Glass Company tulip. The highlights are dark brown and it leaves a film with each sip.
The aroma of black coffee is truly amazing and accentuated by sweet milk chocolate and peanut butter. The roasted malt is also exquisite. Warmth brings out malted chocolate balls and the peanut butter aroma transforms into roasted peanuts.
The flavor is much more bitter than I had expected and yet that bitterness adds a pleasant touch against the sweetness. The flavor and aroma mimic one another closely. The finish is long, mild, and progressive from sweet to bitter.
A soft, smooth texture of silk lightens a medium body. Creamy carbonation is a pleasant surprise, while the alcohol is as expected.
This beer was an unexpected and pleasant surprise as I really didn't know what to expect from this brewer. It is definitely a Robust Porter that marries its theme quite well. The sample I had at the brewery led to this growler purchase. Drinking it now, brings back memories of the trip and the good folks we met.
