One draught at Belmont Station, this is a batch of Barefoot Brown soured with a kombucha culture. For those unfamiliar with said culture, such as myself, according to wikipedia, its a fungus that "contains a symbiosis of Acetobacter (acetic acid bacteria) and yeast, mostly Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Candida stellata, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Torulaspora delbrueckii and Zygosaccharomyces bailii." OK, let's give it a go.
Served in a pils glass, Blootvoetse Bruin is a murky dark brown with a small eggshell head that leaves medium lace.
Smell is heavy on the mushrooms (which Kombucha technically is not, even though it looks like, and is commonly referred to as one), very damp and earthy, with dirty socks and plenty of vinegary acetic acid, which is my least favorite bacteria flavor. Actually, I'm not a big fan of raw mushrooms either. At first, the aroma was overwhelming, and not something I even wanted to try. But the shroominess and vinegar subsided a bit, and the sweeter malt background balanced it somewhat as it warmed, although I still wasn't exactly huffing the stuff.
Taste is initially a big blast of dirty, fresh picked mushrooms, then a flash of sweet, red-wine/cider vinegar, before a very strange bitter, dirty earth like finish. Very weird, and not my bag at all. Not really sour, it got sweeter as it warmed, and lost a bit of the edge, but never really endeared itself to me.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, kind of slick.
Drinkability is OK, this is worth trying for the novelity of it alone. This has got to be the 'earthiest' beer ever. In fact, I'll be hard pressed to ever use that adjective to describe another beer again! I've got to give Walking Man bonus points for even trying something like this, very cool conceptually...but ultimately, I didn't care for it and won't be seeking it out again, expect perhaps if it was aged, just to see what happens. Still it did start to grow on me a bit as it warmed...like, a fungus!

I tried this beer at the Portland International Beerfest, a 4 oz. taster in a small cylindrical plastic cup. Conditions not ideal, so appearance/smell ratings are most subjective. Will look for it on-tap at Concordia Ale House or at the Brewery in Stevenson to compare...
A: A cloudy, unfiltered caramel brown with a small tan head.
S: A malty, mildly sweet smell. No hops.
T: Initially bitter, transforming into a slight vinegary sourness, apple cider? Malty & slightly smoky finish.
M: Crisp and pretty heavy carbonation. A tingly mouthfeel and full-bodied flavor.
D: Interesting and enjoyable beer from a style which I am not fully accustomed to, but have liked when I've had it. As I am a fan and supporter of the beers Walking Man is creating, I'm hoping this will be around again beyond just being at PIB.
