jet black in color, tan colored head. decent head retention. aroma is roasty chocolate/coffee with a touch of red wine. taste is similar, with the dry tannic aftertaste of a dry red wine. not sure it really works. thicker bodied.

Blueprint Brewing Co. "Kare Package"
22 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
Notes via stream of consciousness: "CABERNET BARREL-AGED STOUT". It's poured an opaque brown-black body beneath a short head of tan foam. A rougher pour to fill the glass has now given it about an inch of head. The aroma displays red wine, chocolate, oak, roastiness, and a light whiff of alcohol and ethyl acetate. I didn't know what to expect but now I'll say that's exactly what I should have expected - actually, change that, I think it's got more of a wine aroma than I should have expected. It smells like an empty wine barrel so they've got that part right. On to the flavor... the wine remains, I get it right upfront backed by the softly chocolatey/roasty malt, and then it kind of opens up in the middle with some generic red fruit and acidity, and lots of oak. I think there may actually be too much oak on it at this point, but it's not my creation and I'll assume the brewer is happy with it. There's also a touch of ethyl acetate to it, but it's not bad (I should also note that I'm very sensitive to ethyl acetate and others may not even notice it). As it warms some more of the dark malts come out but they're basically just dark chocolate and soft roastiness, nothing more complex than that which is, I have to say, a little disappointing - but on the other hand that allows the wine to come through so maybe it's just fine as it is. Medium bodied, it's quite smooth with a moderate carbonation that at least partially explains it's lack of head. It also has 9.7% alcohol, which usually hurts head retention, and it's barrel-aged which means it was moved about and some of its foaming properties were probably lost during that. In the end I like it. I think the Cabernet comes through nicely despite the fact that it's just from the empty barrels, and the stout base is nicely balanced. It makes a pleasant sipper.
