16oz pint at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square. No idea how this one is spiced - yet, that is.
This beer appears a clear, dark bronzed amber colour, with one finger of weakly puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy tan head, which leaves some dissolving ice floe lace around the glass as it quickly evaporates.
It smells of ginger, nutmeg, and clove spice, bready and doughy caramel malt, a subtle black stone fruitiness, and some very tame earthy, weedy, and musty noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, more muddled gingerbread spices, minor wet mineral notes, fading dark orchard fruity esters, and more understated earthy, leafy, and floral green hoppiness.
The carbonation is average in its palate-satiating frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, with just a touch of innocuous spice taking the sheen off of things at this juncture. It finishes trending dry, as said spices continue their ongoing rampage against the whimpering and lingering malt.
Overall - this is a pleasant enough version of the seasonal style, rendered unto me right at the end of Yuletide, i.e. New Year's Day. Yeah, I'm pretty much sick of this sort of thing for yet another year, but I do appreciate the hair of the dog, happy hour pricing!
