Looks like a battle of IPAs has descended upon Brisbane between Slipstream (representing the Southside) and Brouhaha Brewing (representing the Northside). Poor little Doc takes no sides - having lived equally on both sides of the Brisbane river (TBH both sides of this fine city have their pros and cons). This is a rather clever IPA battle though, with Slipstream, and many Southside establishments, choosing the Southern Hemisphere hops with a hop bill of: Cascade, Ella, Vic Secret, Nelson Sauvin and Galaxy - it reads like a superstar line-up of Australian and NZ hops right there, and after reading the hop bill on the Brouhaha brew this is going to be a real close battle for my tastebuds! Oh yeah and both brews were canned yesterday! Fresh as brah :D
Poured from a 375ml can into a nonic pint.
A: Clear golden body with a thin white head that lingers on for a while, not leaving much in the way of lace either. Not the best start for Slipstream, however I still reckon the battle will be tight. 6/10.
S: Punchy green hops from the off! Grassy/cannabis notes mingle with a smell I’ve only ever encountered from brews this fresh: rubber. I shit you not: rubber. Wafting up from that rubber is a fragrant floral note and a light tropical hint of passionfruit. You can thank Galaxy hops for that delightful passionfruit note. This IPA is the beer equivalent of milk straight from the cows udder - udderly great. 9/10.
T: Flavour is a bit more restrained with the hops - there were a few big aroma hop names on the bill, this is to be expected. Front end is grassy/green/cannabis/rubber, mid palate is dry cracker malt, and finish has a syrupy tropical passionfruit and green papaya. Not really getting the Nelson Sauvin character much (usually brings in a Sauv Blanc white wine note but not getting that here). It’s not lacking in variety of hops, it’s actually suffering from a few too many voices here. 7/10.
M: Reminds me a bit of the 4 Pines In Season IPA, which was a bit insipid in the mouthfeel: Mid to light bodied, tad watery, some hop resins floating around and a light carbonation. Meh. 6/10.
D: I reckon this is one of those brews that is a corker on tap - there’s a lot of fresh hops on a wafer-thin malt base, and the extra body that comes from a tap would only serve this brew. As it is canned - it’s good but not great. I think barring a shock the Brouhaha brew [ha-ha] will win this IPA battle for me. 7/10.
Food match: Vietnamese rice paper rolls with a chilli dipping sauce FTW.
