After a day of exploring SW WI's driftless region, there's no better place to stop to eat than the Driftless Cafe.
Our mid-day lunch stop didn't disappoint. The dinner menu looked more interesting, but the quality of the food is top notch. We had the daily special pizza and the mornay-sauced mac & cheese. The pizza was pretty much perfect, and the mac was pretty good, definitely unique. The chef was recently nominated for a James Beard award and was featured on the PBS show Wisconsin Foodie, to give you some idea of the caliber of quality here.
Beer selection is good, but not especially tailored for beer geeks. They have 8 taps of local stuff and 15 or so bottles. Driftless Brewing Co. and Hillsboro both have taps here. There were a few craft staples and imports.
Service was great, we sat at the bar and staff were always circulating around. There was a strong vibe that everybody really cared about what they were doing, which was nice. The owner was around, and the bartender was a Chicago transplant so we talked about that.
Overall it's a great place to stop for lunch or dinner, and Viroqua is a fun little town to explore. Be sure to also hit the Co-op and Kickapoo Coffee down the road.
