A pitch black beer with a thin head. A fair amount of carbionation is visible.

The smell has hints of molasses, iron and an indefined smell that comes closest to old flower water.

Taste is mainly sweet, with hints of candisugar, wort and sugar. Bitterness is almost non-existant. Maybe a slight bitterness from the roasted malts. The roast is barely present. Overall a sweet stout which is not matching the style definitions I have.

Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.

From a bottle into a snifter.

Note: Drunk only a few weeks before the best before date.

APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger thinner looking tan head that quickly fizzes down to nothing but a thin film ring. You can actually hear the head vanish like cola. Color is black with quite a bit of carbonation. No head remains and leaves no lace down the glass. Looks and sounds like cola.

SMELL: Sweet caramel malt and maybe some green apples. Again, smells like sweet syrupy cola, which is not a good thing. Definitely not a stout nose. Not enticing at all.

TASTE: Sweet caramel malt again, but way too sweet. Sweet-sour green apples and sugar candy are way out of place. Aftertaste lingers too long and is far too sweet. Anything but a stout. Would make a better oud bruin.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Goes down smooth and finishes quite sticky and cloying from all the sweetness. Not great, but the feel is at least tolerable.

OVERALL: This is one massive failure. I took about four sips, cringed after each one, then gave it to my friend Drain, who'll drink anything. Way too sweet and cloying for a stout. This one reminded me of a Belgian oud bruin actually, which would have been a good warning for me not to buy it. This is definitely not a stout, and if you're looking for one, avoid this at all costs.
