This beer is from The Modern Frontier Series, a collaboration between the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau and Homeland Groceries (and their associated chains in Oklahoma), and several rotating brewers.
This edition, courtesy of Stonecloud Brewing was interesting.
It was described as a "tropical pale ale" on the can. I can't find a good definition of the style (but several others brewers making tropical pale ales), so I'm going to assume that it should be a pale (with appropriate color and hopping), but that goes in more of a citrus-tropical direction. Presumably, there would be some sweetness but it should stay relatively balanced with hops --- but not too much hop bitterness (which would put it in IPA country).
It pours a bright very hazy gold liquid with a white head. Slight pineapple aroma.
Flavor is a lot. Pineapples and oranges for sure, but also a good bit of hop bitterness. Elements of this beer reminded me of a hefeweizen in the fruity notes, but this is hopped very differently and there are no bananas obviously. A few spices, maybe some black pepper. Maybe a little bit too bitter for me, just a little out of balance for my tastebuds, but admittedly this beer doesn't fit easily into genre categorization.
Medium-full mouthfeel.
Overall, this was interesting and makes me want to try more of this rotating series.
