L- Superficially black, though with a torch behind it's ultra-deep red-brown. Poured with 2mm head that swiftly cleared, as is common with beers of this high ABV%
S- Caramel/toffee with hints of alcohol, that's it; an interesting scope!
T- As per the smell^ but now with some charred wood notes, deep roasted grain. It is quite sweet. Slight bitter/dry notes but then a kind of hints of smokey/'chemically' burnt facet. I had this latter 'chemically' facet in another big stout this week, the 'chemically' is like when a plug or piece of electrical equipment blows and you get smoke but with a pungent burnt/chemical aspect .
F- It certainly has impactful presence. I can feel the ABV% on my palate which is a bit of a distraction.
O- Perhaps an example of being too clever by half? Serve well chilled to begin is my tip as this risks getting OTT sweet if you linger longer. I don't like the 'chemical/burnt' facet here. No idea what causes it but it's not for me. I can finish this, but it's not one I'd wish to repeat.
Bought from TremblingMadness York for home delivery as part of a large pick-your-own home delivery. 440can BB: October-2022 £6.15
