Looks good on pour. Moderately sized soapy head, settles to a cap before vanishes. No lace. Clear gold. Boozy nose over toffee. Sweet malts to taste, toffee again, noticeable alcohol. Two trick pony.

Pours a beauty dark gold colour, with a thick and frothy head. Sweet and earthy smelling. The taste has toffee, nougat and molasses notes. Quality mouthfeel

Pale, golden straw body that is absolutely crystal clear. Three finger foamy white head that condensed into a lovely one finger thick, dense cap that lasted the entire way. Foamy lacing all the way down. Absolutely gorgeous looking beer. Phenomenal.

Smells of deep, doughy yeast. A slight alcohol whiff adds just a hint of spiciness — and there is a general spiciness to the nose, a little peppery and a little, tiny bit of cloves. Toasty, caramel malt. This is a bock, and a very, very good one for a Canadian/non-German brewer. Oh, that bready aroma is so inviting.

Taste follows the nose and then some. Tastes are amplified which is great, the nose promises and the taste delivers. Doughy, delicious yeasty flavours up front slowly bake into some toasted, sweet caramel malts. Gentle, noble hop bitterness giving it a clean grassiness in the background and some delicious spiciness, aided by the alcohol. A little bit of cloves, white pepper and allspice.

Low-medium bodied beer, with good/medium carbonation, lightly prickly, lightly foamy, this creates a very, very clean sip. Light bitterness on the finish balanced by some lovely cereal grainy, toastiness. Overall, a semi-dry finish as well.

I’ll note this is a brand new beer from Caledon Hills, which with their Pils and others, seems to enjoy aiming for European styled beers. I’d love for them to try a Belgian, which doesn’t get a lot of attention from NA craft brewers. This is such an excellent example of a Bock, you’d never know it was local and not German. Glad I got to enjoy this as fresh as possible, could only get fresher if I had it straight from the keg a few days ago before they shipped these out. This is a definite grab if you live in Canada, or like Bock beer, or Pilsner, or euro beers, or… Well, you get the picture. This is very good. Not exceedingly complex, but it doesn’t have to be. It hits everything it wants to, and hits the mark well.
