Bitter, malty and oh, so succulent, the imperial IPA of Gravely Brewing gets the super grouping of Citra, Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook and Azacca hops together for a crescendo of citrus, tropical and herbaceous character.
Supergroup simply abounds with a fruit forward perfume, enticing the nose with the brightness of citrus and the succulence of tropical fruit before a twinge of pine and hemp trail closely behind. Boldly amber in color, the ale is cast in a faint haze while lacing beautifully in its wake. Sweet maltiness soothes the initial palate with caramel, honey and a richness of toasted pecan.
While the sweetness slowly recedes, the malts play a supporting and balancing role against the hops. But the hops eventually steal the show with pink grapefruit, freshly zested orange, light lemon and lime peel. Apricot, papaya, mango and pineapple follow suit with a succulence to the citrusy brightness. The honied malts seem to give the fruity hop impressions a sense of ripeness and juiciness before the bitter brunt of muddled pine needles, sappy resins and a late palate of herbaceous grasses.
Medium full in body, the drying effects of hops and the beer's bright carbonation gives the beer a lift and lightness to mor resemble the drinkability of standard IPA. This dangerously smooth and highly drinkable ale finishes peppery with bitterness and extends long and lean with citrus peel and faint cannabis.
