This Summer Ale heralds the warmer days to come with bright, crackery malt and a blend of fruity and piney hops. We fermented with yeast cultured from a particularly delicious cask of Yorkshire bitter.

Pours a cloudy straw yellow color with 1.5 fingers of a white soapy head that dissipates somewhat slowly.

Aroma has a distinct English yeast character that gives off some banana and clove. Also getting some lemon, slight orange, some dankness, and light pine from the hops. Some breadiness from the malt.

Taste is light and refreshing. The esters from the yeast give off some banana and clove, but it's much more tame compared to the smell. The hop character is more amplified, bringing lemon, orange pith, some earthiness, and pine. Cracker and slight bread from the malts.

On the higher side of a light body. Decent carbonation. Smooth, silky, and dry. Very drinkable.

This is very enjoyable. The hop character from the Cashmere, Wai-iti, and Amarillo in combination with the English yeast make for an interesting beer. Light, but complex.

poured from a 16oz can into a 2nd Shift stange. pours a fairly clear gold with a finger of soapy white foam head. light hops on the nose but it’s got almost a belgian thing going on with esters and cloves. same with the taste. hits with a nice punch of hops but ends with the belgian qualities i got on the nose. it’s drinkable. medium-full mouthfeel. not my favorite but it was fun to try.

Had on cask. Mostly clear pale golden body with a full white head. Smell has a more raw english yeast but not in a bad way, orange slices, a hint of biscuit, musky pine hops and sulfuric earth. Taste has bright orange and lemon with grass and herb hops, slight white onion, great yeast with esters and a whisper of peach, a delicate yet complex beauty. Feel is light, frothy, bittering yet dry, with simultaneous bright paleness. I really hope they keep making these english ales on cask, keeps me coming in!

Canned 4/19/22; drank 6/12/22 @ the Yarchives.

Cloudy pale yellow appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice white head; strong, frothy lace.

Lemon & soft pine needle notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Lemon & mild banana flavors up front; a mildly dry pine needle note on the finish.

Balanced & pleasurable; I'd have another!

Golden Pub Ale? Dunno, but based on their use of a cultured Yorkshire Bitter yeast, I'm reviewing with that style in mind. Although... I see the BJCP has a British Golden Ale I'd never heard of. Hmm.
"History: Modern golden ales were developed in England to take on strongly-marketed lagers. While it is difficult to identify the first, Hop Back's Summer Lightning, first brewed in 1986."

Definitely enjoyed a few Summer Lightnings while in the UK.

Canned on 4-19-22. Poured into my Libbey Impy.

L -- Very pale, lightly hazy, straw color with a sudsy white head that settles fast.

S -- Spicy hops and sweet, biscuity malts.

T -- Tart, citrus hops up front, a touch of pine resin. Lightly sweet, honey-ish, biscuit malts in balance, but bitter, resiny hops dominate the finish and aftertaste.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft to silky and dry with a light to light-medium body.

O -- A decent, hoppy drinker for Centennial and Amarillo fans -- but used in good balance. Goes down nice and refreshing. And now that I can compare it to something, I see the connection.
