This is my second brush with BareWolf Brewing out of Amesbury, MA, and it's another hoppy beer. This time, instead of a focus on Nelson Sauvin hops (which was awesome, by the way), they're back with a Citra and Mosaic double dry-hopped IPA clocking in at 7.4%. This hop combo is known by my friends and I as the "you can't mess it up" combination... the complexity and oleic content of Mosaic crossed with the characterful familiarity of Citra is usually an instant-win in my book. Let's see how this new brewery does!

This pours a rather nice looking unfiltered medium-amber color with some lighter golden undertones coming through if held up to light. Some foam builds upon each small pour, giving this about a finger of head total. The lace on this one is fairly solid, with some interweaving lattices forming as the head sinks down. The surface here is covered with head, giving this a dense and regal appearance in my glass. Very solid stuff! A bit darker than I thought it'd be, but great anyway.

My first impression is honestly mostly biased towards Mosaic hops, since it gives off a real proclivity towards dank and grassy elements, but I do get a little bit of tangerine, guava and grapefruit here as well. The Mosaic seems to really lead the way, though, with its strong grassiness and scallion-like notes. After a while, this starts to come off more herbal and tropical with some attention thrown to the citrusy side of things. Overall, a well-balanced nose with good use of both hop varietals.

Flavor profile feels pretty solidly based in the hoppy pale ale realm of things, with some mango, cantaloupe and citrus fruit rounding out a moderately-malty mid-palate. I like the solid malt presence here; it really works with the hops to balance everything out.

The feel is pretty much on the medium-heavy bodied side of things for a semi-strong IPA, with low carbonation and a smooth finish. Solid stuff. I would probably get more of this if future batches of it existed, but I get the feeling this is a one-and-done.

Since I'm a big fan of both citra and mosaic hops, this product looked, from its label, to be a natural one for me. I haven't had much experience with Barewolf products due to their lack of distribution in my area but fortunately obtained a 16 oz. can of Quiet Desparation in a trade. The product more than met my expectations and proved to be an excellent combination of these two hop varieties. ABV of 7.4% barely noticeable and probably just about right to add some additional strength. Only negative is that I had just one can - I'll be looking for this one and hopefully other Barewolf products in my travels.
