Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass with slight signs of carbonation, leaving a few tiny dark khaki patches and a light ring around the glass. Aroma of dark toasted malt, whiskey, oaky vanilla and cocoa; nice. Flavor follows with rich dark toasted malt, chocolate, whiskey, woody oak and vanilla, a little graham cracker developing into a smooth whiskey and malt finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess, a good mouth feel and carbonation despite the near still appearing pour. I'm leery of barrel aged brews from small, unknown (to me) breweries, but I snagged this as it was one of the last bottles on the shelf, and I liked the label. I'm glad I did. These guys did an excellent job on this barrel aged stout. Strong whiskey character, but well supported by the sturdy malt with chocolate and vanilla notes. Looked a little skimpy, but the carbonation was fine and oddly there was quite a bit of lacing as I emptied the glass. I bought their barleywine too and look forward to trying it next year after a year of cellaring. Impressive introduction to the brewery.
