16oz can purchased at Community Pint, in Spokane, Washington, for $4.99. This is a "fresh hop collaboration pale ale" brewed by Varietal and Stoup Brewing, in Seattle, using "unkilned Comet and Citra hops." The stamp on the bottom states it was canned on September 30, 2020, and also commands me to "Vote Beer 2020." I always do.
Poured into an IPA glass, this was a slightly chill hazed golden amber color. Good sized off-white head. Decent lace.
Aroma reminds me of grapefruit and lemongrass. Definitely a dry, herbal quality to it. Malts are pretty low in the mix.
Dryly biting in the taste, with the bitter, herbal grassiness a co-equal to the citrus characteristics. Aftertaste is dry and crisp, with a lemony zing. Slightly green vegetal taste as well.
Medium bodied, with a mouthfeel that is lightly rainy and yet crisp.
This will not please someone used to the smoothed down corners of a hazy. It's old-school, bitter and dry. I find that refreshing, but I'm not sure I'd want more than a couple. Incidentally, the fresh hop fine print on the label is especially fine. I had a feeling it was a fh beer from the name, but it required reading glasses to confirm my hunch.
