From the Varietal Beer Co. website: We brewed this collaboration with Chukar Cherries for their 35th anniversary as an homage to their decadent chocolate covered cherries. Our stout features a base of Buzz barley malt and rich roasted barley malts, with cocoa powder added to the kettle and dark bing cherries added late in fermentation. Let it warm up to 55ºF to enjoy fruity dark chocolate with bright candied cherry flavors and mild sweetness in the finish.

Poured from 16oz can into my BeerAdvocate teku. Can is stamped best by May 2024.
Appearance: rich dark brown hue with a finger of frothy tan foam atop. Looks good to me.
Smell: rich chocolatey aroma with a notable vanilla and just a hint of cherry coming through. I like it, though to be honest could do with a little less vanilla.
Taste: a little more of the cherry comes through in the flavor than in the aroma, which is nice. Sweetness is moderate, with some nice chocolate character and just a hint of roast. The vanilla is there, too, and like in the aroma, I think I’d prefer a little bit less of it.
Mouthfeel: meidum body with a big carbonation and a nice, smooth creaminess.
Overall: this is a relatively subtle beer, which I like. I like cherry beers in all their forms, so I was happy to see a cherry Varietal stout here, brewed in collaboration with WA-based Chukar Cherries (their stuff is inescapable at Pike Place Market and Made In Washington stores). I also like that this guy is below 6% — yeah, you can make good stouts in the non-imperial range!
