I want to like this but it missed all the marks I think it was aiming for.. This beer will never have the smoothness a lactose beer should but it would taste much smoother with about 4-5 years on it.

16 ounce can, Batch 1.

This beer looks great. Very dark, with a big foamy tan head that lasts a while. The aroma is a little weaker than I'd expect for an Imperial Stout, mostly cocoa and vanilla. The taste is sweet, not cloyingly so, but plenty sweet. There's none of the roasted malts that you'd usually find in a stout. The ABV is not noticeable. The mouthfeel is on the thin side. It is quite smooth.

Overall, this beer is a disappointment. This beer reminds me of a Hershey Bar, mild milk chocolate and vanilla, too sweet, and utterly lacking in character. I haven't liked Hershey Bars since grade school.

L:. Pours a dark brown black with a small tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves no lacing on the glass.

S:. Roasted malt, some chocolate, notes of oat, and a touch of caramel. Aroma is a touch light for my tastes.

T:. Roasted malt, milky sweetness, a bit of oat and sweet caramel, this is a bit sweet for my tastes.

F:. Cola like carbonation, body feels a little thin for my liking.

O:. It's a solid beer, but I do feel like it's missing a bit to make it truly great.

Enjoyed on tap at federal tap house served in a snifter
Black with long lasting beige head
Smells cookie like sweet roasted malt and caramel scent
Taste and feel is very good with a smooth texture and creamy body an smoky dry finish with coffee and brownie brittle quality with light alcohol in the dry finish with a mild sweet maltiness throughout
This is a high quality oatmeal stout that is easy to drink for the strength

On tap at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small foamy head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like very sweet chocolate, some roast, maple, and vanilla.

This is quite sweet, and I probably could have done without the lactose. There's some overly sweet maple and caramel type flavors, a bit of vanilla/lactose creaminess, and sweet milk chocolate. This is ok in small doses, it just came out way too sweet for me because of the lactose.

This is very creamy, but somewhat light bodied, with a decent enough drinkability. There's not much in the way of booziness here.

This isn't really all that bad, but it's just too sweet for me.

16 oz can, no clear date. Label says Batch #1

Black in color, with tan colored head. If aroma, leans a little more chocolate than coffee but they're both in there. Taste is mildly sweet, not a surprise there's lactose in there. Full bodied, silky smooth.

"Batch #1." Released December 2019; drank 3/1/20 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance. A violent pour yielded a HUGE tan head; a thick curtain of lace.

Cream, fresh earth & black licorice notes in the nose.

Creamy, medium thick mouthfeel.

Cream, fresh earth & dark chocolate flavors; no booze heat.

Nicely balanced & easy to drink, but not real memorable. Worth a quaff.

Can from ABV.
Black with reddish brown highlights, this is capped with a dark brown head with good retention and lacing. The nose is soft, creamy, tons of oatmeal, lactose and cream, soft milk chocolate, dark caramel, minimal bitterness, some vanilla, brown sugar. A little toffee. The palate opens rather impossibly smooth and creamy with a lot of oatmeal with milk chocolate, dark caramel, toffee and strangely , not a whole lot of bitterness. Sweet Vietnamese coffee. Mid palate is a little thin with honey and chocolate milk flavor. Sweet with oatmeal, milk chocolate and vanilla lingering on the finish. Mild roast, the bitterness is really reserved here. Good stuff.

Poured into a 13 oz stemless tulip glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a very attractive near pitch black with a 3 finger head that leaves a thick collar of light brown lace behind, with excellent retention. 4.5

Smell is cocoa, vanilla, coffee, toffee, caramel, and some biscuity grains. 4.25

Taste follows cocoa, vanilla, coffee, toffee, caramel, and a little grainy biscuit in the balanced and rich finish. 4.5

Mouthfeel is big, gentle carbonation, slightly creamy just above room temp, and at 9% ABV amazingly approachable. 4.75

Overall I was wondering what these guys could do with a stout and they didn’t disappoint. Excellent stout all around. 4.5

I've been kinda avoiding recent FO stuff because they've stopped can dating at the new facility they've been brewing out of, and some of their IPAs were kind of off even when I could find them fresh, but this is a big ol' imperial stout, so I figured that a lack of date wouldn't be a big deal. To be more specific about what this is, it's a 9% oatmeal stout brewed with lactose. So it's an oat milk stout? But not made with oat milk. Anyone following?

Pours a pretty nice dark brown color with some surprising clarity to it. Of course, once it's in my glass you can't see through it whatsoever, but when it was coming out of the can, it seemed a little less thick than I personally expected. The head formed quickly and solidly with a moderate mocha/dark khaki hue that built up to a finger-and-a-half before sinking down to a thin yet retentive ring in my glass. No lace show, but legs are decent. Digging the slight surface coverage as well, here. Overall, quite good looking!

I'm immediately happy with the nose on this one. It's not really getting great reviews, but this has all the makings of a very good imperial stout to me. I get the slight brown sugar, caramel, and oaten dustiness I expected, along with some light vanillins, milk chocolate, and toffee. Not much in the way of roastiness; honestly seems more like a sweet stout to me. I'd kind of be okay with that, not gonna lie.

On the palate, I feel pretty vindicated for my assumption... this beer is SMOOTH! This might be one of the smoothest big stouts I've had in a while. The feel is ludicrously soft and plush, which of course makes sense given the feel-improving capabilities of both oats and lactose. Absolutely no note of the 9% alcohol here, which makes this dangerous. It's weirdly not that heavy either, though it does contain some big flavors of chocolate, blonde roast coffee, vanilla, and oats. A very slight kiss of earthy/grassy hops is present here, too, but there's virtually no bitterness to speak of. I will definitely enjoy drinking this, though I can easily see why it would be kind of polarizing. There's some light tobacco/earthen notes once it warms, but the focus does remain on the "oatmeal chocolate chip cookie-esque" main thrust of flavors. Recommended if you like big milk stouts with well-hidden ABVs that are crazy-easy to drink.

Jet black body; leaves a one-finger + thick head, fairly dense and creamy. Faint aroma of dark roast malt with some echoes of cocoa and milk chocolate. Decadently sweet with an excellent milk chocolate taste; cocoa; only at the very end of the taste does a bit of alcohol and bitterness come forward. Heavy body; warm and silky; oily and smooth.

All in all, a very delicious semi-sweet imperial stout. There is nothing cloying here and the alcohol presence is deftly muted. The beer delivers richness and satisfaction.
