Hefty dark chocolate, coffee and vanilla notes are infused with freshly roasted cold brew from our neighbours at Vortex Coffee. Aged in bourbon barrels for added depth and complexity.

New rendition of this beer? Listed at 10.2% ABV but is bourbon barrel aged. Wax sealed 650 ml bottle for $14 CDN. Served cool into a tulip.
Appearance - Very dark brown, near black in the glass. Fairly dark tan foam head that's about a half finger and lasts for about a minute before fizzling off into a small collar.
Smell - Huge bourbon notes, lots of vanilla and a subtle bit of chocolate. Roasty but also sweet smelling. No coffee, the bourbon is aroma 1 and 2 in this brew.
Taste - Plenty of bourbon up front followed by some vanilla and then milk chocolate. There's enough bitterness to avoid oversweetness, but at the same time the beer never seems bitter. A little caramel mixed in and a trace of marshmallow maybe. Pretty complex and the bourbon while clearly a focal point, doesn't bludgeon you the way it does to a certain extent in the aroma.
Mouthfeel - Heavy bodied for sure, and very light on the carbonation, there is a thinness present that easily prevents from being sludgy. Light kiss of booziness at the back of the throat, but well done as opposed to ham fisted. Really good feel.
Overall - Really a rather good BBA imperial stout, lots of flavor, lots of bourbon, but really smooth and not a chore to drink at all. The booze hits hard on the nose, the flavor is a touch too sweet on the palate, making this definitely one for sharing, but a really good effort and easy enough to enjoy the big bottle over a long drawn out sitting. Keeping the other one for a good cold snowy night in the future as that is when a brew like this is most sensational.

Pours black with carbonation, but the head near immediately disappears. So does a lot of the carbonation. The nose is lovely, with the bourbon coming across strong. The taste is a bit thin, with the vanilla sweetening things a tad much and the bourbon dominating. The coffee is not very strong and I feel that some added dark chocolate would have helped the balance.
As is, it's still nice, but not much better than the same beer without the bourbon.
