Great Barn Brewery "Kintnerweizen Hefeweizen"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$3.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a hazy golden body beneath a finger's width of rocky white foam. The aroma has a little bit of a vegetal note to it which is weird and kind of off-putting. Beyond that there's some sweetish and wheaty malt and a light touch of banana. We're not off to a good start here and I'm hoping that the flavor is free of that odd vegetal note... nope, it's still there but it's not as bad as the aroma suggested. It's lightly sweetish and wheaty with a touch of banana as well as some mild plastic-like phenols and just a touch of clove. It's gently acidic and balanced by a moderate carbonation. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. The head held up just OK for a hefeweizen, probably at least in part due to a lower carbonation level than most - I can certainly understand that though as they're a smaller operation and higher carbonation levels lead to packaging issues and draft loss. The lacing was limited as well, which is most likely due to poor transfers. All in all it ticks the boxes for the style but it's got some issues. There's no dating on the can, which I understand if they're using mobile canning company to package, and this could be quite old. Unfortunately I don't know. I'll try to remember to grab another one of these later in the year to do a re-review.

I enjoy beers of this style and it had been quite a while since I reviewed one of these on here. This was also the first beer that I had from Kintnerweizen and it was not quite true to stylistic form, although it was nice to kick back with as it was a welcome change from fare more typical for this time of the year!
This had a golden look to it that was more appropriate for a Pilsner as there were plenty of bubble streaming up through it as there was a thick and bubbly head that settled down and let absolutely *zero* lacing behind. That might have been a first for me as this was surprising and somewhat familiar at the same time. Lots of banana, wheat, and oats in the nose as the taste strongly followed suit, along with some bread and subtle spice underneath everything. Chewy, rounded, and a bit sour, this taste was easily this beer's strongest attribute as the hint of golden sunshine and bright orange juice kept this from feeling too heavy.
There wasn't a date on the bottom of the can nor any hint of booze in this as it did warm me up a bit before I finished it off. This was one of the more unusual Hefeweizens that I've had but it would be perfect for a cool spring night when everything's blooming and the following day warms up nicely. Lovers of the style won't be disappointed but it's not on par with it's European counterparts either...

Served on tap into a 12 oz. tulip glass.
L---Cloudy, dirty orange color. Nice head to start, with no retention to speak of and no lacing. Was not anything like a proper Hefe.
S---Sweet, perhaps a bit too much so. Banana & a touch of spice.
T---A bit of spice, not much though, and banana. Minimal hefe quality.
F---Heavier than a hefe like Weihenstephaner. A bit on the sweetish side, too.
O---Misses the mark by a good bit. I wouldn't get this one again.
