Appearance: Pours an opaque, wooden brown body with a fizzy, full off-white head.
Smell: Aroma of a heaping bowl of sugar, pureed fruits, and yeast with a hint of leather.
Taste: Malts and pervasive prune fruitiness go down with a scoop each of white table sugar and light brown sugar. Strong yeastiness throughout. Dash (or three) of cognac. Touch of acidity as near the drying finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Very well carbonated. Decidedly warming.
Drinkability: Can be a bit coarse with it's rough sweetness and boorish booziness, but I still managed to find some pleasure in drinking it.

Obtained this bottle at the Ealing Beerfest., West London in June 2005. Attracted to this beer especially because it's specified that Westvleteren yeast is used to brew this beer~~ Looked from outside the bottle the layer of yeast sediment is really thick... Guess I'd have to prepare my palate for a massive attack of yeasts and malts.
A: pours a quite cloudy, dark orange copper hue, with a rimmed beer head which looks really just normal
S: deeply sweet and perfumy nose, with a bit of "ink" smell upfront while preserved figs and dates and sweet dark chocolates make appearance later on overall quite complex but a bit overly sugary for my taste.
T: at first a strangely astringent and sharp mouthfeel of fruity and yeasty flavour attacks the palate and cuts its way down the throat very unusual. As it decants, an increasingly warm mouthfeel of brown sugar, dark malts, figs and dates gradually follows. The finish is malty and slightly tartly sweet, with some residual taste of fig cake on the palate. Not exactly my cup of tea but I must say the palate is impressively rich.
M: the initial sharp mouthfeel of yeast leaves a tangy touch on the palate, but turning more and more creamy and mellow as it goes; the overwhelming mouthfeel is alcoholic warmish, but not over the top. This beer tastes much less strong than its abv. tends to suggest.
D: a full-flavoured beer to savour as digestif, although it might benefit from a little decanting beforehand.
