Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Beer Run (Charlottesville, VA).
A: Chestnut brown with short cap of light beige head which leaves a few dots of lace.
S: Solid malty aroma with toffee, raisin, and caramel notes. Hoppier than most doppelbocks with herbal and spicy hop character coming through. Alcohol is present but not overbearing, and there is no yeast character.
T: There is an overriding spicy note that carries through the beer an seems out of place, peppery and spicy, unclear whether this is hops derived (seems more vegetal in nature) or alcohol derived or a combination. The maltiness is caramelly and toffee tinged dark maltiness, not overly sweet, but hampered by the spicy character that cuts through all parts of the flavor and aroma profiles. Hopping is too high with too much late hop flavor for my liking for the style.
M: Good feel with medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation. Lightly creamy but not cloying or heavy.
O: TN could improve this with lighter hopping and a longer ferment/more conditioning. Not bad but not up to their standards.
