Brewed for our friend Dan Kachur, in honor of his 10,000th Ratebeer.com rating, this barleywine has a pleasant smokey profile from mesquite and beechwood smoked barley malt.

Woohoo! My 10,000th rating! Keg at the brewery. Hazy copper, orange tint, thin dense creamy head, nice ring sticks around. Aroma of Smoke forward, hints of mesquite, toffee, hints of chocolate and minty hops. The taste is toffee, dark fruits, caramel, smoke. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, mild booze but not overpowering. Huge thanks to everyone for coming down and sharing this occasion with me, and huge thanks to the guys at 3 Notch’d for hosting us! It has been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to see where the next 10,000 takes me! Note for BeerAdvocate: I am "Dan Kachur," see the commercial description. This was brewed for me for my 10,000th beer rating on another website. I am super-proud if this beer and I have loved the journey to get there, and the journey since (almost to 15,000). I hope you will grant me this indulgence. ;)

Poured by the man himself. Thank you, sir.

Copper body, moderate haze, khaki head. Smoke aroma, wood, sausage, campfire. Charred wood, burnt malt. Medium bodied. Solid.

I chose American style BW because this beer isn't traditional. I think in the end this is the right choice, but debate it if you like.

The appearance is the classic cloudy somewhat brown, somewhat amber color. This one leans a little brown. The head collects at the edge in a full but medium-thin ring, but doesn't deviate from this state, new bubbles replacing the old perfectly to imply stasis.

The nose is smokey, mainly with a hint of fruit - cherry and/or maybe grape. Makes me think a bit of a sweet fruit-flavored cigar. Also included is a hint of leather that I'm not sure I've ever noticed in a beer before (realize it's been used by others). It's a strange smell, makes me think of being in a tobacco shop with the smoke of a far off brush fire permeating the air.

Taste is really more a smoked beer taste. I may have to request a change of style. The warmth that has grown in this beer while doing the review seems to bring more smoke flavor to the party. The tongue agrees with the nose on most points, really. The bee starts with a decent side of caramel, and as the smoke builds fairly quickly, the woody/grassy bitterness grows slowly underneath it. In the end they all meld to form the impression of a campfire in the Carolina pines, drinking a nice, malty beverage.

In the end, this might qualify more as a smoked beer. It actually does remind me in many respects surrounding the smoke notes of the beers I've enjoyed by Schlenkerla. It doesn't quite live up to the balance, but does provide a very interesting beer. Since it crosses so many styles (brewery essentially throws it into Barleywine, but I think that may be marketing), hard to rate "to style". Adjusted ratings accordingly:
If you like barleywines, beware.
If you like smoke beer, be adventurous, this probably won't offend you
If you like "experimental" beers, try this! (If you can get it, I am guessing it's a one-off)
