Appearance: Draft into a pint glass. Looks just like a freshly poured Coca Cola. The pillowy foam lingered for a while and left intermittent lacing.
Aroma: Malt and dark fruit.
Taste: Roasted malt. Raisin sweetness much more mild than the nose led on. Some masked hop character including a pine aftertaste and resin on the back of the tongue.
Feel: Heavier than expected, but not in a bad way. Also a lot more carbonation than most beers this dark. In fact, if you couldn't physically see the beer before drinking it, the experience would likely be much different because by sight alone one would expect stout or porter characteristics which are not prominent here.
Overall: Black IPAs are an understandably goofy and contested style, for all the reasons this particular beer is representative of. It's not reminiscent of a traditional IPA, which I'm sure is how the "Cascadian dark ale" moniker came about.

Taster at RVA location. Dark brown pour, clear, ring of head. Bitter, roasty aroma. Taste adds some caramel sweetness, light roasty bitterness, noticable hops.
