Had this on tap at Popeye in Ryogoku, Tokyo. Poured into a snifter. Burgundy hue with a thin tan head. Light cognac scent with a bit of berry in the flavor. Beautiful dreamy thin scum on the top of the brew. Beautiful Hakusekikan-style scent. Great strong ale that could pass for a barleywine (and outshine most others) anyday.
Also, as a correction, this is listed at Popeye as a "strong ale," not a barleywine. If you talk with the bartenders, they will confirm that this is an American strong ale.

Listed as a barleywine at Popeyes and I'm willing to go with that, as it has all the characteristics of the American style while scraping within the alcohol range (7%).
Deep amber body with a whispy off-white head that lasted well but gave no lace. Rich, fruity aroma, with dates, brown sugar and alcohol. Great flavour, and a decent hop bite to boot. I'm picking up wood, grapefruit, honey and apple cereal. Its a pleasing mix - very luxurious and full flavoured, as a winter seasonal should be. Why I'm drinking this in 30 degree weather I'm not sure. Chewy body and great drinkability.
