650ml bottle - thanks again to my friend Chris for sharing this after hauling all of his stuff to his fancy new place - Sunday Funday, indeed!
This beer pours a solid black, with subtle caramel basal edges, and two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and faintly creamy beige head, which leaves a bit of remote archipelago lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of roasted caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, a bit of indistinct black orchard fruitiness, faint cafe-au-lait notes, black licorice, and some tame earthy, musty, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a subtle free-range ashiness, medium dark chocolate, a hint of porridge sweetness, and more earthy, leafy, and floral verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-assuring frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, with just a wee bit of char taking things down a peg or so here. It finishes off-dry, the roasted malt and sundry essences carrying the lingering day.
Overall - this is a pleasant, and easy to drink version of the style, with lots of balanced flavours working to make my tastebuds nice and cozy, while the oats do well to contribute in their own special way. Worthy of investigating should you get the chance.
