Hazy red-brown color. Poured a tall head that took several minutes to drop down to a thick skiff. Hard to see in the haze, but it looks like it might be a moderate flow of mixed size bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Left patches and strings of lacing.
Smells very hoppy, more vegetal than floral. Light caramel malt smell shows up after getting used to the hops. Very light yeast. Swirling the glass kicked up a light barnyard, some sweet caramel, and a touch of mint. After a minute the mint shifted to smell more like a fresh opened can of interior latex paint.
Strong hop taste, but it is only mild to medium bitter. After a few seconds it starts to taste strongly like latex paint smells. Some caramel malt shows up later and it takes an unexpected turn towards a tart, citrus flavor. The aftertaste is a medium bitter as the hop flavor fades.
Foams up quickly. Creamy for a few seconds and then it evolves to more coarse bubbles. A bit oily, and gets thicker towards the end. Moderate tongue tingling.
I never would have considered latex paint as a beer flavor, but this mostly works. This is missing some of the distinctive caramel I associate with new world Märzens. I don't know how it compares to a real German Märzen.
