Translating to "dark wheat," this Dunkelweizen is similar to our Hawley Hefeweizen but a little darker in color. Light banana notes backed by a bready, nutty, chocolaty malt backbone.

Dunkleweizen from Wallenpaupack Brewing. 16 oz can purchased from Wallenpaupack Brewing, Hawley, PA (10/20/2021). $ 5.36 (including tax)/can ($0.335/oz). Stored at reefer in store and at 40 degrees after purchase. Reviewed 27/04/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on bottom of can “CANNED 09/15/21”. Served at 44.2 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 51.4 degrees.
Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Deep Amber (SRM 15), clear. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, high density, average retention, diminishing to an irregular 0.4 to 1.5 cm crown fed by moderate carbonation and a thin, rocky cap.
Lacing – Good. Wide band of tiny bubbles.
Aroma – 3.5 – Malty and sweet. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.5 – Starts lightly sweet and malty with distinct clove, ends slightly bitter. Not detecting any banana. No hops, no yeast. No ethanol (5 % ABV as marked on label) taste or aroma. No gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, watery, soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 Nice dunkelweizen, equal to many I’ve had in Germany. To my taste, this is clove forward, supported my malt. The wheat leaves the body slightly weaker than expected, but still decent. I’d drink more of these.

Thanks to Ozzylizard for this one, from his hits during NBS BIF #14. 16oz can (dated 9/15/21) poured into 14oz teku. Poured the expected dark, almost muddy, brown of the style with over an inch of light tan head that had very good retention and light lacing.
The aroma, while expected, was a very well done combination of wheat, yeast, clove, and banana. Maybe a touch of bubblegum and spice too.
Very similar on the tongue; bubblegum was definitely there, and all the other features were more clearly defined.
The body was light and smooth, with a finish that started out a bit sweet, but dried out quickly and very nicely.
Drinkability was very good. Maybe it's because I don't see the style locally that often, but I want to drink a bunch of these.
Overall, a very, very good take on the style. A must-try if you see it.

2021 can poured at fridge temp. Pours a gorgeous opaque brown with tan head. Head quickly recedes.
Nose: wheat, orange, honey, nutmeg, a bit of toffee, and nice bready malts. Interestingly, I get a hint of coffee. I'm also getting a bit of an earthy note and grass. In general, the nose is sweet and malty.
Taste: this is super interesting. Wheat, banana, oak, toffee, wet wool, apple, a floral spice, a touch of cinnamon, and a candy sweetness. Very malty. Very smooth! Loving it.
Mouthfeel and overall: Medium to light-bodied feel. Very smooth and very easy to drink. Overall, a really interesting wheat beer!
